Icon of the Seas - Largest cruise ship sails (January)
The ship has 20 decks and is 1,198 feet long - making it longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall. Over 7,000 passengers can stay aboard. The ship is home to lots of sea-based firsts - including the largest water park, ice arena, and swimming pool at sea.
Swiftmania (February)
Taylor Swift wins a record-setting 4th Grammy for album of the year for Midnights. Her Eras Tour grosses nearly $2 billion by the end of the year.
Record Breaker - Womens Basketball (March)
Caitlin Clark becomes the all-time leading scorer in NCAA basketball, and her dominance helps women's basketball surge in popularity.
Mexico announces its first femal president (June)
Claudia Sheinbaum, the former Mayor of Mexico, is the first-ever female president in Mexico (and in North America). She received almost 60.7% of the vote - the highest ever vote percentage in Mexican democracy.
Paris, France: First ever outdoor Olympics Opening Ceremony (July)
The Opening Ceremony took place along the River Seine. The fun lasted for hours and included 85 boats carrying 6,800 athletes from 205 National Oluympic Committees. Twelve acts also appeared around the city at key locations to reflect France's culture and history.
Norway becomes first country where electric cars outnumber petrol (September)
Norway has pledged that all newly sold cars will be electric by 2025. Electric vehicles sales increased in the US this year, with about 14% more sold - although the total percentage of electric vehicles in the US for 2024 is still less than 20%.
Hurricane Helene (September)Hurricane Helene makes landfall in Florida, causing widespread destruction and more than 230 deaths across the region, especially western North Carolina. Some estimates put the cost at $200 billion, the costiliest hurricane in U.S. history.
