On Friday, November 1, we will be doing a school wide lockdown drill with staff. If possible, I'd like support staff to be here (stay clocked in) if possible. For any support staff that can't be here, please let me know and I will review the information with you. Please look through the following information carefully before our meeting on Friday, November 1st.
Important information to know (district lockdown procedures/requirements):
1. Overview/directions for the drill (details for Willow's lockdown review on Nov. 1, also listed below)
2:00 - Staff Meeting/Review
For the 2024-2025 school year, Lockdown Drill #1, staff should be staged assuming the lockdown is taking place 30 minutes prior to the end of the day.
Announce lockdown drill three times per protocol.
video overview of safety protocols
2:10 - Lockdown Announcement over the overhead loudspeaker
Teachers need to immediately:
Sweep hallway
close/lock doors
Shut off lights
Move to the location in your classroom that is least viewable from door
Note time, take attendance
Staff members, along with law enforcement officers, will perform hallway checks and ensure classroom doors are locked.
2:20 - Verbal all-call release (for the drill)
NOTE: This will be a law enforcement release in a real situation, going door to door with a key.
2:20-2:30 - debriefing in media center
How will you account for visitors?
Where should students and staff move to if they are in the cafeteria? Gym? Media center? What if students and staff are outside?
Are there students who may need additional assistance during a drill?
Are there language barriers?
What special considerations are required for 30 minutes before the end of the day?
After the drill (during the week of November 4, due Nov. 8):
Talk through the drill with your students:
Explain that the announcement would say: Implement lockdown procedures at this time.
Discuss with students that sometimes there are times when our school will have emergency situations like a fire drill, needing to stay in the classroom for a medical emergency, or other emergency situations.
If students are in the hallway or restroom, they need to move quickly and quietly to get behind a locked door.
You do not need to explicitly discuss active shooters, but most importantly, remind them when a lock down alert is called, all students need to listen carefully and follow the instructions of their teacher.
Check in with students who are absent on the review day to make sure they also have the information on what is expected during an emergency drill.
3. Sign off for reviewing the information with your students.- due November 8th
4. Information that will be sent home in this week's Family Newsletter (October 31).
5. WR Crisis Team will review safety protocols and complete a School Safety Assessment in November, and will schedule a Table Top exercise with Tracy Habisch-Ahlin in December.
Please let me know if you have any questions -
Sue
